According to an estimate substance use leads to 11.4 million deaths each year worldwide. As per the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report of 2014, Pakistan has a total of 6.7 million drug users, out of which 4.2 million are considered drug dependent.
In a country of approximaely 212 million people, honed as the fifth most populous country of the world around 29.5% of the Pakistani population lives below poverty line. Given the scarcity of fundamental resources i.e. access to clean water, food, and safe living space along with lack of employment opportunities the number of people addicted to drugs is only meant to rise.
Currently, myriad of substances is used by the drug addicts across Pakistan. Among the drugs used in Pakistan are Cannabis, prescription opioids (pain killers), tranquilizers and sedatives, and opiates such as heroin and opium. In the more recent past, the use of methamphetamines has been detected in 19,000 drug users across country. Cannabis, however, remains the number one drug of choice for a shocking 3.6 percent of the total population of Pakistan. Individuals start their journey as early as 15 years of age. According to a recent survey individual aged between 15 and 64 years use heroin regularly. As per the given facts and figures, Pakistan presents a very dismal picture of the situation. Needless to say, with little to no rehabilitation treatment available to the drug addicts, death toll of individuals with drug problems is only meant to rise. As per the findings of UNDOC, Drug addiction programs are available to only 30,000 of the 4.2 million drug addicts that are present in the country.
